The Northern Viet Nam Industrial Bamboo Cluster project represents Mekong Bamboo’s major focus of work.
The industrial subsector includes material supply areas from upland communities in the provinces of Thanh Hoa, Hoa Binh, Son La, Phu Tho, Ha Giang, Yen Bai, Nghe An, Bac Kan in Vietnam and Houaphanh, Lao PDR.
Lead firms in industrial processing close to Hanoi and provincial capitals source raw and semi-processed material from bamboo producing communities in upland areas in these provinces. The cluster includes more than 100 businesses, mostly smaller processors close to bamboo resources with larger processing businesses around Hanoi and the major provincial capitals. The industry reaches around 500,000 people in poor upland ethnic minority areas of Viet Nam and Lao PDR.
An increasing demand of bamboo is the driver for poverty reduction from the emerging Northern Viet Nam Industrial Bamboo Cluster.
Raw bamboo of several species suitable for high value production are available for sourcing from the more than 800,000 hectares of bamboo forest, including farmer-owned and community and government managed areas. Businesses and governments are seeking solutions to develop a value added industry based on a strong global and domestic market for traditional and new wood and fibre substitute bamboo products.
Project Goal
To develop the industrial bamboo subsector in Northern Viet Nam and Houaphanh Province, Lao PDR for the benefit of all industry participants.
